Death of a Fugitive

by John Pilkington Book 2 in the The Bishopsgate Ward Mysteries series.

First published 2026

4.5(565)

Bishopsgate Ward, 1595. Constable Matthew Cutler is torn between law and conscience when a young protester fleeing the authorities takes refuge in his parish. The man's complaints about high prices and corruption have made him a wanted fugitive, while Cutler's daughter Jane has become personally involved in his fate.

At the same time convincing counterfeit coins are spreading through Bishopsgate. The trail points toward the feared coiner Thomas Gunnell and a criminal network whose reach makes open investigation dangerous. Cutler again relies on disguise and local knowledge to penetrate the gang, but helping one fugitive while hunting another places his public office and family at risk. The novel uses coinage, food-price unrest and urban policing to deepen the series' portrait of Elizabethan London.
