Normandy, January 1590. Captain Will Revill and his companion Tom Bright are serving with the English forces supporting the Protestant Henry IV during the French Wars of Religion. He is sent toward Paris to test the loyalty of Sir Edward Stafford, England's ambassador, who is suspected of passing information to hostile interests. The mission turns a soldier into an intelligence agent operating among rival French, Spanish and English networks. When Revill learns of a Spanish force moving to support Mayenne, he must carry warning through enemy territory. The novel combines military campaigning with the documented uncertainty surrounding Stafford's diplomatic conduct.
