Charles of Lorraine, Duke of Mayenne

Charles de Lorraine, Duke of Mayenne was a French nobleman and military commander from the powerful Guise family. After the assassination of his brother Henry, Duke of Guise in 1588, Mayenne became the principal political and military leader of the Catholic League opposing the Protestant claimant Henry of Navarre.

Mayenne commanded League forces through the struggle that followed Henry IV's accession claim and received Spanish support against the new king. After military defeats and Henry's conversion to Catholicism weakened the League, Mayenne eventually submitted to Henry IV in 1596. He remained a major nobleman until his death in 1611.

John Pilkington’s A Reluctant Traitor places the Duke of Mayenne at the head of the Catholic League confronting Henry IV in 1590. Although the novel follows the fictional Will Revill, Mayenne’s army and Spanish support shape the military and intelligence problem Revill must navigate while testing the loyalty of the English ambassador Sir Edward Stafford. A warning about Spanish troops moving to reinforce Mayenne turns the duke’s campaign into the immediate strategic threat driving the mission.
