Set during the later French Wars of Religion, One in a Thousand follows fictional loyalties through a kingdom divided between Catholic and Protestant factions while Henry of Navarre moves toward the French throne. James combines romance and adventure with the uncertainty of civil conflict, where family, faith and political allegiance do not always point in the same direction. Travel between courts and military strongholds exposes characters to conspiracies and sudden reversals as yesterday’s ally may become tomorrow’s enemy.

The historical setting is the struggle that eventually made Henry IV king and brought a measure of stability after decades of religious war. James treats the period through personal risk rather than abstract doctrine: marriages, inheritances and friendships are repeatedly tested by faction. The result is a broad historical romance in which the future Bourbon settlement is visible, but never inevitable to the people living through the conflict.
