Elizabethan England, in the 1590s. Twelve-year-old Ben Button is an apprentice actor touring with Lord Bonner's Men when the company performs at a wealthy country house. A jewel-encrusted gold plate disappears and one of Ben's fellow players is accused of stealing it, placing the actor in danger of the gallows.
Ben and the household's young Sarah investigate the theft and discover that the plate carries a political history connected with Mary, Queen of Scots and the people who supported her claim. What begins as an attempt to clear a friend's name becomes a search for concealed loyalties and treason. The first Elizabethan Mysteries novel introduces younger readers to the practical world of a travelling acting company and the religious and political tensions of the 1590s.
