In the aftermath of the Yorkist victory at the Battle of Towton, Elizabeth Woodville is a Lancastrian widow whose husband has been killed and whose children’s inheritance is threatened. She petitions the new king, Edward IV, secretly marries him and becomes queen of England, advancing the Woodville family while intensifying conflict with powerful Yorkist nobles.

Edward’s unstable reign is challenged by rebellion, exile and renewed dynastic war. After his death, Elizabeth struggles to protect her children as Richard III takes the throne and her sons disappear in the Tower. Sanctuary, rebellion and negotiation with Margaret Beaufort become part of her attempt to preserve a Yorkist future.
