Henry VI, Part 3

by Shakespeare

First published 1595

3.7(8,223)

The dynastic struggle between Lancaster and York becomes a cycle of battles, broken oaths and retaliatory killing. Henry VI is repeatedly displaced, Margaret of Anjou fights to preserve her son’s inheritance, and the Yorkist cause passes from Richard, Duke of York, to his sons Edward, George and Richard.

Shakespeare follows the conflict through some of the bloodiest reversals of the Wars of the Roses, including the Yorkist victory associated with Towton and the later restoration of Edward IV. The future Richard III increasingly emerges as an independent political force, linking the civil war directly to the next history play.
