Macbeth

After a military victory, Macbeth and Banquo encounter three witches who predict that Macbeth will become king of Scotland. Encouraged by Lady Macbeth and increasingly convinced that fate can be forced into fulfilment, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the crown.

The new king’s insecurity produces further killings, while opposition gathers around Malcolm, Duncan’s surviving son. Shakespeare transforms the historical Macbeth into a tragedy of ambition, fear and political violence, using medieval Scotland as the setting for a ruler who destroys the legitimacy he seeks to possess and becomes trapped by his own attempts to control prophecy.
