Duncan I of Scotland

Duncan I was king of Scots from 1034 until his death in 1040. His reign ended when he was defeated and killed by Macbeth, who then became king.

The historical Duncan was a young and active ruler rather than the elderly victim portrayed in Shakespeare’s tragedy. His brief reign belongs to a period when Scottish kingship depended on dynastic competition, warfare and support from regional elites.
