English Separatists in the Dutch Republic

In 1608 members of English Separatist congregations fled increasing pressure from the authorities and settled in the Dutch Republic. Amsterdam offered greater religious diversity than England, but the exile communities also encountered new theological arguments, economic constraints and divisions about church organisation.

John Smyth and Thomas Helwys became central to the emergence of the early Baptist movement in Amsterdam, while John Robinson, William Brewster and other members of the Scrooby congregation moved on to Leiden. Some later returned to England, while members of Robinson’s congregation sailed for Plymouth Colony in 1620.

Karen Haden’s Naming the Dead is set among English exiles in Amsterdam in 1608 and includes historical Separatist and Baptist figures alongside the fictional physician Alexander Baxby. The religious movements and named leaders are historical; the murder investigation and private dialogue are fictional.
