Two young English adventurers go to sea in the later sixteenth century and become involved in Francis Drake's voyages against Spanish power. Life aboard ship exposes them to Atlantic storms, long passages, uncertain supplies and the violence of privateering along the Spanish Main.
Their fortunes rise and fall with Drake's audacious expeditions at a time when commerce, exploration and war were increasingly difficult to separate. Encounters with Spanish forces and distant ports place the boys inside the widening rivalry that would eventually culminate in the Armada campaign against Elizabethan England.
