Northern Rebellion

The Northern Rebellion of 1569 was led by northern Catholic nobles who opposed Elizabeth I’s religious settlement and hoped to restore Catholic influence. Mary, Queen of Scots, then in English captivity, formed part of the political background. The rebellion briefly challenged royal authority in the north before being suppressed.
The rising mattered because it confirmed Elizabeth’s fears about Catholic plots and noble disloyalty. Its failure was followed by executions and harsher suspicion of Catholic networks. It also pushed the Mary Stuart problem closer to the centre of English security policy.
