Knights Hospitaller in Malta, 1530–1565

After losing Rhodes to the Ottoman Empire, the Order of St John remained without a permanent territory until Charles V granted it Malta and Gozo in 1530. The Order established its convent at Birgu, maintained its international organisation and strengthened the islands as a naval and fortified base.

The Hospitallers combined religious and medical functions with warfare against Ottoman and North African forces. Their galleys operated across the central Mediterranean, while Malta became entangled in Habsburg, Ottoman, Italian and commercial rivalries. These tensions culminated in the Ottoman Great Siege of 1565.

Several Richard Fitzwarren novels use the Order as employer, jailer and political power. The fictional arms negotiations and captive exchanges reflect the way a transnational military order could connect mercenaries, shipping, fortifications and rival European governments.
