Edward Courtenay, 1st Earl of Devon

Edward Courtenay, 1st Earl of Devon, was the only surviving son of Henry Courtenay, Marquess of Exeter, and Gertrude Blount. His family’s Plantagenet descent made the Courtenays potential rivals to the Tudor succession, and Edward spent much of his youth imprisoned in the Tower of London after his father was executed for treason in 1538.

Mary I released Courtenay in 1553 and created him Earl of Devon, but his royal blood immediately made him a focus of marriage schemes and political suspicion. He was implicated in the atmosphere surrounding Wyatt’s Rebellion, imprisoned again, and eventually permitted to leave England. Courtenay died at Padua in September 1556, probably from illness, although the sudden death of such a politically sensitive exile encouraged later speculation.

Sam Burnell’s A Queen’s Executioner uses Edward Courtenay’s royal descent and exile as the basis for a Tudor assassination mission. Richard Fitzwarren is ordered to find Courtenay in Italy because his Plantagenet blood, association with Wyatt’s Rebellion and possible marriage to Princess Elizabeth make him a continuing dynastic threat to Mary I. The novel then fictionalises the uncertainty surrounding Courtenay’s sudden death at Padua in 1556, asking whether political necessity can justify turning an inconvenient claimant into a murder target.
