1491–1499 CE
Perkin Warbeck emerged in the early 1490s claiming to be Richard, Duke of York, the younger of the Princes in the Tower. His cause received recognition or support from Margaret of York, Maximilian I, Charles VIII of France and James IV of Scotland.
Attempts to invade England and Ireland failed, but Warbeck remained a serious diplomatic and political threat to Henry VII. He surrendered in 1497 after involvement in a rising in Cornwall and was executed in 1499 following an alleged escape plot.
The White Princess makes Warbeck’s disputed identity central to Elizabeth of York’s divided loyalties. Historical fiction may sustain the possibility that he was Richard, but surviving evidence cannot establish that claim.
