Charles VIII of France

Charles VIII inherited the French throne as a minor and initially ruled under the regency of his elder sister Anne of France. His campaign against Brittany culminated in his 1491 marriage to Anne of Brittany, strengthening French control over the duchy. In 1494 he invaded Italy to press an Angevin claim to Naples, helping to begin the prolonged Italian Wars.

In historical fiction Charles is important both as Anne’s first husband and as the king whose Italian expedition transformed European diplomacy. His reign supports narratives about dynastic coercion, royal marriage, court faction and the military ambitions that drew France into Italy.

In Rozsa Gaston’s Anne and Charles, her proxy marriage to Maximilian of Habsburg offers an alliance against France, but invasion and political isolation force Anne into a settlement with the young king Charles VIII. In Rozsa Gaston’s Margaret of Austria, Margaret of Austria is raised to become queen of France, only for Charles VIII to repudiate their childhood betrothal and marry Anne of Brittany.
