French–Breton War
1487–1491
The French–Breton War developed from the French crown’s attempt to prevent Brittany from escaping royal influence during the minority of Charles VIII. After the death of Duke Francis II, the young Duchess Anne inherited a weakened duchy facing military invasion and intense diplomatic pressure.
French victory and the siege of Rennes compelled Anne to marry Charles VIII in 1491. The marriage ended the immediate war and tied Brittany to the French monarchy, although Anne continued to defend the duchy’s legal identity.
