The Two Hundred Years War challenges the conventional definition of the Hundred Years’ War as a primarily Anglo-French struggle lasting from 1337 to 1453. Michael Livingston shifts the perspective towards France’s long effort to define its borders and political identity, beginning with the maritime and feudal crisis of 1292. England remained the principal rival, but Burgundy, Brittany, Flanders, Navarre, Scotland and other powers repeatedly changed the direction and scale of the conflict.

The book moves from dynastic claims and campaigns under Edward III through Crécy, Poitiers, Agincourt and Joan of Arc, then continues beyond the loss of England’s major French possessions. Its endpoint is 1492, when the marriage of Charles VIII and Anne of Brittany and the Treaty of Étaples marked a new political settlement.
