Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc emerged during one of the darkest moments for the Valois cause in the Hundred Years’ War. Claiming divine guidance, she helped lift the Siege of Orléans and supported Charles VII’s coronation at Reims. Captured by Burgundian forces and handed to the English, she was tried and executed in 1431.

Joan matters because her short life had enormous political, religious, and symbolic force. She transformed morale, challenged gender expectations, and became a point of contest between sanctity, heresy, propaganda, and national memory. Her story also shows how war, faith, and monarchy could become inseparable.

Joan has inspired many novels, including Katherine J. Chen’s Joan, Kimberly Cutter’s The Maid, and Mark Twain’s Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc. Her story suits fiction about voices, trial, charisma, suspicion, war leadership, and the loneliness of a young person turned into a national symbol.
