Joan of Arc follows the young woman from Domrémy whose claims of divine guidance brought her into the final phases of the Hundred Years’ War. It recounts her meeting with Charles VII, the relief of Orléans, the coronation campaign and her capture by Burgundian forces. The book then examines her trial and execution at Rouen, as well as the later rehabilitation and transformation of Joan into a national, religious and cultural symbol.

Joan’s surviving trial records make her unusually accessible for a medieval figure of non-noble birth, but they also preserve her words through hostile judicial procedure. The biography therefore has to distinguish the young woman speaking under examination from later patriotic and religious images. Her story joins military history with questions of belief, gender, legitimacy and the making of national memory.
