The She-Wolf
First published 1959
During the reign of Charles IV, conflict over Gascony brings Isabella of France back to her brother's court as Edward II's negotiator. She refuses to return to England while Hugh Despenser dominates the king and forms a political and personal alliance with the exiled Roger Mortimer.
Isabella and Mortimer assemble an invasion force, overthrow the Despensers and force Edward to abdicate in favour of his son. The novel follows their rise to power and adopts a dramatic version of Edward II's death, an event whose precise circumstances remain historically disputed.
