The Strangled Queen

by Maurice Druon Book 2 in the The Accursed Kings series.

First published 1955

4.3(1,241)

After Philip IV's death, Louis X inherits the throne while his imprisoned wife Margaret of Burgundy remains an obstacle to a new marriage and a secure succession. Her confinement at Château Gaillard becomes the centre of a struggle over whether the king can obtain an annulment or must wait for her death.

The rival factions around Charles of Valois, Philip of Poitiers, Mahaut of Artois and Robert of Artois compete for influence over the inexperienced king. Druon presents Margaret's death as murder within this contest, although the historical cause of her death is not established.
