Reign of Charles IV of France

1322–1328 CE

Charles IV succeeded his brother Philip V and inherited disputes over royal finance, Flanders and the English king's French lands. Conflict over Saint-Sardos led to war in Gascony.

Charles died without a surviving son. The resulting succession dispute placed Philip of Valois against the claim advanced through Isabella of France for her son Edward III.

The She-Wolf and The Lily and the Lion connect Charles's reign to the fall of Edward II in England and to the replacement of the direct Capetians by the Valois dynasty.
