The Dead Don’t Wait
First published 2019
East of London, April 1555. A priest is found stabbed beside the road near St Botolph, and Jack Blackjack is accused of the killing. Clearing his name requires him to investigate a victim whose neighbours offer incompatible accounts of his past and his purpose in the village.
The case takes place within Mary I’s Catholic restoration, when a priest’s loyalties and associations can carry political as well as religious danger. Jack follows evidence among outlaws, parish disputes and concealed grievances while another crisis repeatedly diverts him from the enquiry.
