Rise and Fall of Anne Boleyn
1527–1536
Henry VIII’s determination to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon brought Anne Boleyn to the centre of court politics. Anne’s marriage and coronation accompanied the crown’s rejection of papal jurisdiction and the elevation of reform-minded clergy and courtiers.
Failure to produce a surviving son, factional conflict and the king’s changing favour left Anne vulnerable. In May 1536 she and several men, including her brother George, were convicted on charges whose credibility remains deeply disputed, and Anne was executed in the Tower of London.
