King’s Fool Mysteries

The King’s Fool Mysteries make the historical court jester Will Somers the detective at Henry VIII’s court. Will’s licence to joke, gossip and move between social ranks gives him access that formal officers do not possess, but it also leaves him dependent on the favour of a volatile monarch. Beginning amid Henry’s campaign to end his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, the series follows Will through Anne Boleyn’s fall, Jane Seymour’s queenship, the Pilgrimage of Grace and the arrival of Anne of Cleves.

The mysteries are inseparable from Tudor politics. Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Thomas Cromwell, Robert Aske and Anne of Cleves appear alongside fictional courtiers, servants and murder victims, while Will’s marriage and relationships give him private vulnerabilities at a court where sexuality, religion and loyalty can become matters of survival. The books combine palace murder with the Henrician Reformation and dynastic crisis, using the jester’s privileged but precarious position to view royal history from just below the throne.
