Robert Aske

c. 1500–1537

Robert Aske was a Yorkshire lawyer who emerged as the principal leader of the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536. The rising spread across northern England in opposition to religious change, the suppression of monasteries and grievances about royal government. Aske helped give the movement organisation and a programme that presented its participants as loyal subjects seeking the restoration of traditional religion and redress of abuses rather than enemies of Henry VIII.

Henry invited Aske to court and offered assurances that appeared to open the way to settlement, but renewed unrest in the north destroyed that fragile accommodation. Aske was arrested, convicted of treason and executed at York in July 1537. His career remains central to understanding both the scale of resistance to the Henrician Reformation and the limits of negotiation under Henry VIII.

Robert Aske appears directly in Jeri Westerson’s Rebellious Grace, where the Pilgrimage of Grace forms the political background to Will Somers’s investigation of a murder within Henry VIII’s household.
