Age of Revolutions

1763–1848 CE

The Age of Revolutions describes the connected political and military upheavals that reshaped Europe and the Atlantic world from the later eighteenth century into the nineteenth. It includes the American and French Revolutions, the Haitian Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars and the independence struggles of Spanish America.

These movements shared arguments about sovereignty, representation, slavery, empire and citizenship, but produced very different states and social settlements. Revolutionary warfare also displaced people, destroyed older institutions and carried political conflict across oceans.

Historical fiction can move between divided colonial communities, revolutionary cities, slave uprisings, European armies, naval campaigns and the creation of new republics. This parent context keeps related wars and national periods connected without treating them as a single uniform revolution.
