Pyotr Bagration

Pyotr Bagration was a Russian general of Georgian royal origin and one of the leading commanders against Napoleon. He was mortally wounded at Borodino in 1812, becoming a major figure in Russian military memory.

Pyotr Bagration also held the offices or ranks of knyaz. Pyotr Bagration belonged to the House of Mukhrani and operated within Russian Empire. Pyotr Bagration was born in Kizlyar and died in Sima, Vladimir Oblast.

Tolstoy’s War and Peace portrays Pyotr Bagration as one of the Russian commanders whose calm presence and reputation among soldiers contrast with the confused staff work of coalition warfare. He is prominent in the 1805 campaign and remains part of the novel’s wider treatment of Russian command before his fatal wounding at Borodino in 1812.
