The Second Empress

After Austria’s defeat in 1809, Archduchess Marie Louise is required to marry Napoleon, the ruler she has been taught to regard as her country’s enemy. She enters the French court after his divorce from Joséphine and is expected to provide the legitimate heir on which the new dynasty depends. Her caution and divided loyalties place her at odds with Napoleon’s possessive sister Pauline Bonaparte and the volatile household surrounding the emperor.

The birth of a son appears to secure Marie Louise’s position, but the invasion of Russia and the advance of the Sixth Coalition expose the fragility of Napoleon’s empire. As military catastrophe reaches Paris, she must choose among duty to her husband, obedience to her Austrian family and protection of her child. The novel uses competing perspectives within the imperial household to show political collapse as an intimate struggle over loyalty and survival.
