Two young Englishmen become caught up in Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 and experience the campaign as French hopes of a decisive victory give way to exhaustion, hunger and retreat. Moscow's occupation fails to force Russia to make peace, leaving the invading army deep inside hostile territory as winter approaches.
The return west becomes a struggle against cold, disease, Cossack attacks and the collapse of supply. By following individuals through the disaster, the novel turns the famous retreat from Moscow into a story of endurance in which survival depends as much on improvisation and companionship as on battlefield courage.
