Ranger

Grenada, 1796. Alexander ‘Chart’ Charteris, the mixed-race son of a British planter and an enslaved Caribbean woman, has been raised as a gentleman in England but is cheated of his inheritance, kidnapped and transported to his family’s Grenadian sugar estate as a slave. Fédon’s Rebellion overturns the plantation order before his execution, yet Chart’s refusal to participate in the killing of British colonists places him in danger from the rebels as well.

After escaping, Chart joins the Loyal Black Rangers, a British unit that offers freedom in return for military service against French-backed revolutionary forces. His campaign through Grenada’s interior forces him to negotiate conflicting loyalties of race, class, family and empire while the wider struggle of the French Revolutionary Wars transforms a colonial rebellion into part of an Atlantic war.
