Wolfe Tone
1763–1798
Theobald Wolfe Tone was an Irish revolutionary and one of the founders of the Society of United Irishmen. A Protestant lawyer influenced by republican ideas, he argued for political cooperation among Catholics, Protestants and Dissenters and increasingly concluded that Irish independence required a break with Britain and military assistance from revolutionary France.
Tone sought to unite Irish Protestants, Catholics and Dissenters in a movement for representative government and independence. He negotiated with revolutionary France for military support and was captured after the failed French expedition of 1798.
