Charles XIV John of Sweden

Charles XIV John of Sweden was born Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte in southern France and rose through the Revolutionary army to become one of Napoleon’s marshals. In 1810 the Swedish estates elected him crown prince, expecting military leadership and a secure succession. He redirected Swedish policy against Napoleon, helped lead the coalition in 1813 and gained Norway for the Swedish crown. He became king in 1818 and founded the dynasty that still occupies the Swedish throne.

Bernadotte appears in Napoleonic historical fiction, including broad sagas such as Simon Scarrow’s Revolution quartet, where the marshals form part of the political and military world around Napoleon. His career gives novelists an unusually dramatic arc from republican soldier to hereditary monarch. Portrayals often focus on his rivalry with Napoleon, but his Swedish policy was shaped as much by national interests and dynastic opportunity as by personal resentment.

In C. S. Forester’s Commodore Hornblower, in 1812 Hornblower commands a small British squadron sent to the Baltic to influence Sweden and Russia against Napoleon.
