George Washington

1732–1799

George Washington commanded the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. His leadership helped hold together an often underfunded army, while his voluntary resignation of military command and later transfer of presidential power established important precedents.

Washington was also a wealthy Virginia planter who enslaved more than a hundred people, a central fact in assessing his public commitment to liberty. George Washington was born in Westmoreland County and died in Mount Vernon.

Robert Harvey’s A Few Bloody Noses follows George Washington’s struggle to preserve the Continental Army, British campaigns under Thomas Gage, William Howe and Charles Cornwallis, the turning point at Saratoga and the expansion of the conflict into an international war. Nathaniel Philbrick’s Bunker Hill culminates on 17 June 1775, when inexperienced New England soldiers defend improvised works on Breed’s Hill against repeated British assaults. Joseph Warren, William Howe, Paul Revere and George Washington emerge as complicated participants rather than fixed patriotic symbols. Historical accounts that place George Washington in context include Hourly History’s Culper Spy Ring, Nathaniel Philbrick’s In the Hurricane’s Eye, Gore Vidal’s Inventing a Nation, Robert Harvey’s Mavericks, and Captivating History’s The American Revolution.
