During the winter of 1777–1778, young British soldier Sam Gilpin serves in occupied Philadelphia after seeing his brother killed. The British army enjoys the captured city while George Washington’s troops endure the winter at Valley Forge, but the civilian population remains divided between Loyalists and Patriots. Sam’s encounters with people on both sides force him to question his duty to the Crown and the violence used to maintain the occupation. Espionage, divided loyalties and a developing personal attachment draw him away from the certainties of regimental life, leaving him to choose between obedience to his officers and his own conscience.
