New York, 1776. Thirteen-year-old Isabel and her younger sister Ruth are promised freedom after their owner’s death, but the promise is ignored and they are sold to Anne and Elihu Lockton, wealthy Loyalists who take them to Manhattan. Curzon, an enslaved boy connected to the Patriot cause, asks Isabel to report conversations in the Lockton household. Her dangerous position brings her close to the conspiracy against George Washington, the public execution of Thomas Hickey and a city divided between rebellion and loyalty.
After the British take New York, military occupation, imprisonment and the Great Fire deepen the danger. Isabel has little reason to trust either political camp: both speak about liberty while accepting her enslavement. When Ruth is taken from her and Curzon is confined in Bridewell Prison, Isabel turns intelligence, literacy and courage into a struggle for a freedom that no army intends to grant her.
