Period

Gilded Age America

c. 1870–1900 CE

After Reconstruction, the United States experienced rapid industrial growth, railroad expansion, urbanisation and immigration. Large corporations and new fortunes transformed finance, transport, manufacturing and communications, while workers faced dangerous conditions, irregular employment and violent labour disputes.

The period’s conspicuous wealth existed beside tenement poverty, racial exclusion, political machines and repeated economic crises. Reform movements challenged corruption, monopoly power and social inequality without resolving the deeper conflicts created by industrial capitalism.
