1763–present
United States History begins with the imperial crisis that followed the Seven Years’ War in 1763 and led to the American Revolution, independence and the creation of a federal republic. It then follows territorial expansion, slavery and abolition, Indigenous dispossession, sectional conflict, the Civil War and Reconstruction, as well as the economic and social transformations of the nineteenth century.
Later periods include the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, overseas expansion, industrial conflict, migration, the New Deal, civil-rights struggles and the changing political and cultural life of the twentieth century and beyond. Colonial subjects that end before the revolutionary era remain under Colonial Americas rather than being retrospectively treated as United States history.
