Historical person

Jefferson Davis

born 1946

Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederate States during the American Civil War. A former United States senator and secretary of war, he led a government founded to preserve slavery and struggled with military coordination, resources and state resistance.

In Charles Frazier’s Varina, in 1906, an elderly Varina Howell Davis is living at a retreat in Saratoga Springs when James Blake, a Black teacher who spent part of his childhood in the Davis household, asks her to recover what she remembers of him. John Jakes’s North and South places Jefferson Davis within a narrative shaped by social change and the pressures of ordinary life, political ambition and government, and family, marriage and personal loyalty. Other novels featuring Jefferson Davis include Bernard Cornwell’s Rebel, Griff Hosker’s Rebel Raiders, John Jakes’s The Titans, John Jakes’s Love and War, and Griff Hosker’s Confederate Rangers.
