Jack Hogan is orphaned by murder and then press-ganged aboard a slave ship, an experience that eventually leaves him in Charleston under the power of a slaveholder. When the American Civil War begins, Jack and other displaced young men are drawn into Confederate partisan service rather than conventional army life.

Operating behind Union lines, the riders use ambush, intelligence and rapid movement in the manner associated with John Mosby’s partisan rangers.
