Mexican–American War
1846–1848 CE
War between the United States and Mexico began in 1846 after the American annexation of Texas and a dispute over the border. United States armies invaded northern Mexico, while Winfield Scott opened a second campaign by landing at Veracruz in March 1847.
Scott’s army advanced inland through Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Churubusco and Chapultepec before occupying Mexico City. Antonio López de Santa Anna led the principal Mexican resistance amid severe political instability.
