Richmond, 1861. Nathaniel Starbuck, the son of a prominent Boston abolitionist preacher, is stranded in Virginia as the country moves towards civil war. Rescued from an angry crowd by wealthy landowner Washington Faulconer, Nate accepts a place in the newly raised Faulconer Legion and chooses to fight against his native North beside his friend Adam Faulconer.

The regiment’s march towards First Bull Run exposes conflicts that patriotic rhetoric cannot conceal. Adam doubts his ability to kill, Washington Faulconer seeks military prestige, and Nate must earn the trust of men who regard him as a possible enemy. The novel follows the legion from recruitment into its first battle while confronting the personal loyalties and moral contradictions of service to the slaveholding Confederacy.

Starbuck’s choice is deliberately uncomfortable because personal gratitude draws him into an army defending a political order his upbringing taught him to condemn. His Northern accent and abolitionist family make him suspect within the Confederacy, while returning home would require admitting dependence on a father he resents. The novel uses that contradiction to explore how civil war fractures identity before it ever reaches the battlefield.
