The Crossing

by Gilbert Morris Book 1 in the The Last Cavaliers series.

First published 2010

4.0(264)

Yancey Tremayne, the son of an Amish father and a Cheyenne mother, refuses his father’s plan to return to an Amish community and instead enters a military school led by Thomas Jackson. His education places him within a southern society moving rapidly toward secession and forces him to decide which parts of his divided inheritance will guide him.

When the Civil War begins, Yancey’s training leads toward Confederate service and the fighting around First Bull Run. Romance and religious conviction complicate the military choice, while his mixed family background prevents him from treating sectional loyalty as simple. The novel follows a young man crossing cultural as well as political boundaries at the beginning of the war.
