Robert Shea

Robert Shea was an American novelist and magazine editor best known for combining historical adventure with political, religious and philosophical themes. Born in New York City in 1933, he worked in magazine publishing before becoming a full-time writer. He first gained widespread recognition as the co-author, with Robert Anton Wilson, of The Illuminatus! Shea later concentrated on historical fiction, writing novels set in medieval Japan, Crusader Europe and nineteenth-century America. His major works include Shike, which follows a warrior monk during the conflicts of medieval Japan; All Things Are Lights, centred on the Cathars and courtly culture of southern France; The Saracen, set amid the political and religious struggles of the Crusades; and Shaman, which explores the aftermath of the Black Hawk War. His novels are noted for their fast-paced narratives, extensive historical settings and interest in cultural conflict, warfare and spiritual belief.
