The Last of the Zinja

by Robert Shea Book 2 in the Shike series.

4.3(539)

Jebu and Muratomo no Yukio return to Japan to rally the White Dragon forces against the Takashi clan. Their campaign moves through rebellion, sieges and naval battle toward the destruction of the old ruling house, while Muratomo no Hideyori builds a warrior government at Kamakura. Taniko uses the authority of the Shima family to protect those around her, but victory divides the Muratomo brothers and places Yukio and the surviving Zinja in danger.

The threat then comes from across the sea as Kublai Khan assembles Mongol, Chinese and Korean forces to invade Japan. Jebu’s knowledge of Mongol warfare and Taniko’s political influence become crucial to the defence of Hakata Bay. The conclusion deliberately brings the Genpei War, the rise of the Kamakura shogunate and the Mongol invasions into the protagonists’ lifetimes, completing the saga’s mixture of historical epic, romance and spiritual fantasy.
