Jebu and Muratomo no Yukio return to Japan to challenge the ruling Takashi clan in the War of the Dragons. As eastern warriors gather behind the White Dragon banner, the struggle moves from court conspiracy and provincial rebellion to sieges, cavalry campaigns and naval warfare. Taniko, now an experienced survivor of both Japanese and Mongol courts, uses her position within the Shima family to protect those she loves and to influence the new order taking shape around Kamakura. Victory over the Takashi creates a warrior government, but it also intensifies rivalry, suspicion and the danger facing Yukio and the remaining Zinja.

The later conflict comes from across the sea. Kublai Khan’s forces assemble Chinese, Korean and Mongol troops for an invasion of Japan, forcing former enemies to defend the islands together. Jebu’s knowledge of Mongol warfare and Taniko’s political authority become central to resistance around Hakata Bay. The concluding volume brings the saga’s fictionalised Genpei War and the Mongol invasions into a single lifetime, completing the intertwined stories of Jebu, Taniko, the Muratomo leaders and the declining Order of Zinja.
