Minamoto no Yoshitsune

Minamoto no Yoshitsune was a Japanese warrior commander whose victories during the Genpei War helped the Minamoto defeat the Taira clan at the end of the twelfth century. Born in 1159, he was a son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo and survived the destruction of his immediate family after the Heiji conflict. As an adult he joined his half-brother Yoritomo’s rising and proved an exceptionally successful field commander, playing central roles in the victories at Ichi-no-Tani, Yashima and Dan-no-ura.

Yoshitsune’s military success did not translate into political security. His relations with Yoritomo deteriorated, apparently over questions of appointments, loyalty and independent ties to the imperial court. Declared an outlaw, he fled north and eventually sought protection with the Northern Fujiwara at Hiraizumi. In 1189 he was attacked and killed after his host’s successor submitted to Yoritomo’s pressure. Later chronicles, nō drama and popular literature turned Yoshitsune into the archetypal tragic hero: brilliant, loyal and doomed by political suspicion.

Helen Craig McCullough’s Yoshitsune translates and adapts the medieval Gikeiki, following Minamoto no Yoshitsune from celebrated Genpei War commander to fugitive pursued after his break with Yoritomo. The Tale of the Heike supplies the great medieval war narrative in which Yoshitsune’s victories help destroy Taira power, while also placing those triumphs inside a Buddhist story of instability and loss. Robert Shea’s Time of the Dragons recasts him as the fictionalised Muratomo no Yukio, whose brilliance and political vulnerability drive the clan war. The Last of the Zinja continues that analogue through victory over the rival house and the conflict with the brother whose new military government turns the hero into a danger.
