The Mongol Empire was proclaimed under Chinggis Khan in 1206 and expanded across much of Eurasia under his descendants. Conquest linked China, Central Asia, the Middle East and eastern Europe within a set of related khanates.

Mongol rulers protected major routes, moved soldiers and administrators over vast distances and drew on merchants, artisans and officials from many religious and linguistic communities.
