The Holy Land, 1260. Disgraced Templar knight Josseran Sarrazini is ordered to escort a Christian embassy across Central Asia to the court of Kublai Khan. The mission takes him beyond the familiar crusader world into territories linked by Mongol power but divided by rival khans, faiths and commercial interests.
Khutulun, the warrior daughter of Kaidu, is assigned to guide the travellers despite her family's conflict with Kublai. Her skill and independence challenge Josseran's assumptions, while their growing attachment threatens a diplomatic journey in which neither side can separate personal loyalty from imperial strategy.
