July 1241. Austrian knights capture a group of Mongol scouts outside Vienna and discover that one prisoner is an Englishman wearing the history of a Templar but serving the invaders of Europe. Father Ivo of Narbonne is ordered to interrogate Robert of Hadlow before a trial that may condemn him as a traitor to Christendom.
Robert’s testimony reaches back more than twenty years to his disappearance into the Mongol world and his service during the creation of Genghis Khan’s empire. Captivity, survival and shifting allegiance carry him across the steppe and into campaigns that transform Eurasia. The novel fictionalises the documented mystery of an Englishman captured among Mongol troops in 1241.
